Koko Head Trail

Yesterday, my boyfriend and I went on the Koko Head Trail. It was crazy!! That was my first time and my boyfriend's 4th time. He usually can do the hike within 45-60 mins. It took me a total of 2 hours!
This was a very interesting hike as the trail is a railroad track that climbs the mountain about 1,206 feet about sea level. I've read in other blogs that there's something like 1,100 steps to climb. About halfway into the trail, we ran into a "broken" bridge with a 10'-15' drop below. I was scared so I crawled my way up. My boyfriend and everyone else just walked on by.
When we finally reached the top, I was extremely exhausted but very proud of myself for making it up a mountain. The view from the top is beautiful. And a little scary if you're scared of heights. We rested there for a good 10 minutes before we headed down. My legs were so jello-y, I thought I was going to tumble to the bottom. My boyfriend knows I'm scared of heights and told me to concentrate on each step and not to look ahead. Well, what do you do when someone tells you not to do something...You do it! So I did and I thought I was going to faint! The steps going down are so steep, it looks as though your going down a ladder. Step by step, we made it down.
When doing this hike, you have to remember to bring lots of water and wear sunscreen. Also, my boyfriend made me wear his heart rate monitor. I'm a smoker and not active at all. He knew my heart would be pumping like crazy. After a few steps, I needed to take breaks. Each time I looked at my heart rate, it was between 167-180. My boyfriend let me rest until it was about 160. That was a really good thing to have on me because at times, I honestly thought my heart was going to explode! Thankfully, my boyfriend knew this wasn't going to be an easy one for me and let me take as many breaks as I needed.
Overall, this was a hike that I'm proud to say I did, but I don't think I'll be doing it again. =P
